TL;DR

  • GEO (generative engine optimization) means shaping your content and brand so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews pick you as a source.
  • The term comes from a 2023 academic paper that found adding statistics, quotations and cited sources to a page raised its visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing didn't help.
  • Google says there's no special optimization needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard SEO is the entry ticket, and GEO is what you add on top.
  • The difference from SEO is the goal: being named in an answer, not ranking tenth on a list of links.

Where the term came from

Generative engine optimization was named and defined in the original GEO paper, published in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton and IIT Delhi and later presented at KDD 2024. Their starting point was simple. Search engines that write an answer instead of listing links send fewer people to websites, so site owners need a way to influence whether they appear inside that answer at all.

You'll see the same work called AI SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO) or LLM optimization. The labels come from different corners of the industry. The job is the same.

How an AI answer picks its sources

A generative engine doesn't rank pages and stop. It runs one or more searches, pulls a handful of pages, reads them, and writes a response that quotes or links some of them. Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as using query fan-out, which means firing several related searches across subtopics and combining what comes back.

That has two practical consequences. A page has to be retrievable first, which is plain SEO: crawlable, indexed and relevant. Then it has to be useful to the model once retrieved. A page that answers the question in a clear sentence, with a number and a named source attached, is easier to lift into an answer than one that circles the topic for 400 words before saying anything.

What the research tested

The GEO paper rewrote web pages using several methods and measured how much more visible each version became in AI-generated answers, including answers from Perplexity. The methods that worked best were adding relevant statistics, adding quotations from credible sources, and citing sources inside the text. Old-school keyword stuffing performed poorly.

The effect also depended on the topic. Statistics helped most on law and government questions and on opinion-style queries. Quotations helped most on history, explanations and people-and-society topics. That's worth remembering before anyone sells you a one-size GEO checklist.

There are limits to how far this generalizes. The tests ran on a research benchmark, not on your market, and AI systems have changed a lot since 2023. Treat the findings as direction, not a formula.

GEO vs SEO

Google's position is clear. Google's AI features guidance says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that SEO fundamentals still apply, including making sure robots.txt and your CDN or hosting setup don't block crawling. Pages that show up in those features are counted in Search Console's regular web traffic.

So GEO doesn't replace SEO. It builds on it. Where the two part ways is in what counts as winning:

  • SEO success is a position on a results page. GEO success is being mentioned by name, with or without a link.
  • SEO leans heavily on backlinks. AI answers lean more on brand mentions across sources the model already trusts, which is why digital PR and community presence matter so much here.
  • SEO is mostly about Google. GEO also covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, which retrieve and cite in their own ways.

What GEO work looks like in practice

Most of it is unglamorous. Start by checking where you're cited today: run your core buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note who gets named. Then fix the pages that should be cited but aren't. That usually means putting the direct answer near the top, backing claims with specific numbers and named sources, and tightening structured data so there's no ambiguity about what your business does.

After that, the work moves off your site. AI systems lean on third-party mentions, so coverage in trade press, genuine discussion on Reddit and inclusion in credible comparison pages all feed the same goal. We covered that side in more detail in how to build authority so AI models cite your brand.

How to measure it

There's no rank position to track, so measure citation rate instead: for a fixed set of target questions, how often does each AI platform name you, and who does it name when it doesn't? Pair that with the traffic it sends. Google's AI features show up inside Search Console's web data, and visits from ChatGPT or Perplexity appear as referrals in analytics.

If your market isn't asking AI tools about your category yet, the numbers will be small, and that's a useful answer too. For categories where buyers research heavily before choosing, it's already a channel worth planning for. If you want to see where your brand stands today, our GEO and AI SEO service starts with exactly that audit.
